“In Rural, by Rural, for Rural: How the Kimberley community is growing Australia’s future doctors”

Author: Hanh Nguyen

For over 16 years, West Kimberley community members have welcomed medical students from the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), Fremantle campus, into their lives and their homes.

This documentary captures the experience of medical students and community members who have participated in the Kimberley Remote Area Placement program over the past 16 years and, in doing so, uncovers how the program has helped open the eyes and minds of our future doctors to the possibility of living and working in remote Australia.

Thank you very much to the Shire of Derby West Kimberley and the workplace and accommodation hosts who have supported the Kimberley Remote Area Health Placement since its establishment in 2006. Your active involvement is crucial to the education of Australia’s future doctors and is very much appreciated. The Kimberley Remote Area Health Placement is funded by the Department of Health’s Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program. This video was filmed and produced for Rural Health West in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle. A special thank you to Prof. Donna Mak for guiding the development of this video and for her dedication in leading the Kimberley Remote Area Health Placement Program at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle.
